Henry Addiscott was born at Devonport in 1806 and educated for the Congregational ministry. Throughout his career, he served as pastor to congregations at Torquay starting in 1837, Maidenhead from 1838 to 1843, and Taunton from 1843 to 1860. He died suddenly in Liverpool on October 2, 1860.

Although Addiscott published no dedicated volume of poems or hymns, he gained recognition in hymnology through his contribution "And is there, Lord, a cross for me." Based on the passage "Take up the cross and follow Me," this work was contributed to the New Congregational Hymn Book in 1859.
