Adams, John

John Adams was born at Northampton in 1751 and spent many years as a member of the Baptist denomination. Following his expulsion on doctrinal grounds from the chapel he attended, he opened an independent place of worship in Northampton and constituted himself its minister. Upon retiring from business in 1811, he relocated to London, subsequently moved to Olney, and eventually returned to Northampton, where he died on May 15, 1835. A selection of his hymns appeared in the Gospel Magazine beginning in 1776, though very few of his compositions ever entered general congregational use.
