William Chatterton Dix wrote the hymn "Accept our thanks, O Lord, we pray" as a specialized liturgical piece dedicated to Saint Bede the Venerable. The composition reflects Dix's active participation in the nineteenth-century revival of historical and hagiographical themes in English church music.
The text was contributed directly to The People's Hymnal, a highly influential Anglo-Catholic hymn collection published in London in 1867.
