A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
By Martin Luther
Lyrics
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God's own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.
no thanks to them abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God's truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever!

About This Hymn
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is one of the most powerful and enduring hymns of the Christian faith. Written by Martin Luther, the father of the Protestant Reformation, this hymn is often called the “Battle Hymn of the Reformation.” It was composed during a time of intense personal and political conflict. Luther faced threats from both the Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire for his theological stance that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone.
The hymn is based primarily on Psalm 46 (KJV):
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble... The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” (Psalm 46:1,7)
Luther likely wrote the hymn between 1527 and 1529, a period marked by the Black Plague, the death of his daughter Elisabeth, and increasing danger to his life. In the face of fear and persecution, Luther expressed unshakable confidence in God’s sovereign protection and triumph over evil.
