Sarah Ellen Taylor (1883–1954) was a dedicated twentieth-century educator and hymn writer whose work bridged English and American Protestant traditions. Born in an English manse in 1883, she was the daughter of a Primitive Methodist clergyman, growing up deeply immersed in the rich theological and musical heritage of the Wesleyan revival movement. At nine years of age, she immigrated with her family to the United States, where she pursued higher education and went on to graduate from the Women’s College of Brown University in 1904.

Taylor spent nearly a half-century as a schoolteacher, a vocation she approached with a deep sense of Christian service. Her long teaching career notably included six years spent working in Southern mission schools, specifically in Talladega, Alabama, and Richmond, Virginia, providing vital education in under-resourced communities during the Jim Crow era. She retired from teaching in 1949, turning much of her remaining energy toward sacred poetry.

Though her catalog of published works is modest compared to the prolific writers of the previous century, Taylor earned a highly respected place in modern hymnody through her theological precision and elegant use of language. Her most enduring contribution to the church came late in her life, when she submitted a text to a nationwide quest sponsored by the Hymn Society of America to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Gutenberg Bible's printing.

Her resulting masterpiece, "O God of Light, Thy Word, a Lamp Unfailing," was chosen and published in the society's landmark 1952 collection, Ten New Hymns on the Bible.

Shines through the darkness of our earthly way,

O'er fear and doubt, o'er black despair prevailing,

Guiding our steps to thine eternal day.

The text seamlessly blends the intimate, personal comfort of Scripture (drawing heavily on the imagery of Psalm 119:105) with a grand, global vision of a unified humanity, praying for the day when "myriad tongues, in one great anthem blending, acclaim with joy thy wondrous gift to man." Commonly paired with the majestic Welsh melody LLANGLOFFAN, the hymn quickly found its way into major denominational hymnals across North America.

Sarah E. Taylor passed away on October 5, 1954, just two years after her defining hymn achieved national recognition, leaving behind a legacy of quiet service in the classroom and a timeless prayer for spiritual illumination.
