Authored by Anne Shepherd (née Houlditch), this popular children's hymn appeared as No. 29 in her collection Hymns adapted to the Comprehension of Young Minds in six stanzas of five lines. Robert Moffatt translated the hymn into the Bechuana language for his Kuruman collection in 1838. A four-stanza selection was introduced into the Leeds Sunday School Hymn Book in 1853, after which the hymn spread widely across English-speaking countries and various denominational hymnals.
