Michael John Saward was a prominent English clergyman, broadcaster, and hymn writer who served as a vital bridge between the traditional structures of the Church of England and the modernizing impulses of the late 20th century. Born in Blackheath, Kent, in 1932, Saward was educated at Eltham College and Bristol University before undergoing theological training at Tyndale Hall. Ordained in 1956, his career was marked by a unique blend of high-level ecclesiastical administration and creative media work. He notably served as the radio and television officer for the Church Information Office, a role that allowed him to explore how the Christian message could be communicated effectively in a rapidly changing technological landscape. His career culminated in his appointment as a residentiary Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

Saward’s most significant impact on hymnody came through his long association with the Jubilate Group. Alongside his contemporary Michael Perry, Saward was a driving force behind the "Hymn Explosion," advocating for hymns that used contemporary English and addressed modern social realities. He served as the text editor for the groundbreaking and controversial Hymns for Today's Church (1982). This collection was famous for its radical "wordsmithing," which involved removing archaic pronouns like "thee" and "thou" from classic hymns to make them more accessible to modern worshippers—a move that sparked significant debate within the Anglican communion but ultimately paved the way for modern liturgical standards.

As a writer, Saward produced approximately sixty hymns, characterized by their intellectual rigor, scriptural grounding, and rhythmic vitality. His most enduring contribution is arguably "Christ Triumphant, Ever Reigning," a majestic hymn of praise that celebrates the various stages of Christ's life and his ultimate victory. Set to the soaring tune GUITING POWER, it has become a staple for festivals and processional use. Other notable works include "Baptized in Water," which has become a standard choice for baptismal services across many denominations due to its clear, concise articulation of sacramental theology.

Beyond his hymns, Saward was a prolific author of prose, including titles such as Leisure (1963) and All Change (1983), which reflected his interest in how faith intersects with everyday life and shifting social norms. He was also deeply involved in the governance of the Church of England, serving as a church commissioner and a member of the General Synod. Michael Saward passed away in 2015, leaving a legacy as a churchman who was both a guardian of the cathedral tradition and a pioneer of the vernacular, ensuring that the "songs of the people" remained vibrant, intelligible, and theologically sound.
