Blessed Is the Man
By Anonymous
Lyrics
in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congn~galion or the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

About This Hymn
This hymn is a poetic rendering of Psalm 1. It describes the blessings that belong to the person who avoids ungodly counsel and chooses to walk in the path of righteousness. Instead of following the way of sinners, the godly person delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it continually. The hymn compares such a believer to a strong and fruitful tree planted beside flowing water, steady and prosperous in everything God leads them to do.
In contrast, the hymn describes the fate of the ungodly, who are like chaff blown away by the wind. They cannot stand in the judgment, nor can they join the congregation of the righteous. The hymn concludes with the assurance that the Lord watches over the way of His faithful ones, while the way of the wicked will come to ruin. The message calls worshippers to choose the path of faithfulness, trust in God’s guidance, and delight in His word.
