This Joyful Eastertide

By George Ratcliffe Woodward

Lyrics

1. This joyful Eastertide,
away with sin and sorrow!
My Love, the Crucified,
has sprung to life this morrow:
Refrain:
Had Christ, who once was slain,
not burst His three-day prison,
our faith had been in vain;
but now has Christ arisen,
arisen, arisen;
but now has Christ arisen!
2. Death’s flood has lost its chill
since Jesus crossed the river;
Lover of souls, from ill
my passing soul deliver:
3. My flesh in hope shall rest
and for a season slumber
till trump from east to west
shall wake the dead in number:

1 Corinthians 15:20-22; Romans 6:9; 2 Timothy 1:10; Hebrews 2:14-15

About This Hymn

“This Joyful Eastertide” was translated and adapted in 1894 by George Ratcliffe Woodward from a seventeenth century Dutch hymn. Woodward was known for his careful work in bringing ancient and continental hymn texts into English for congregational use. This hymn is a vibrant proclamation of Christ’s resurrection and its victory over death.

The opening lines celebrate the joy of Easter and reflect 1 Corinthians 15:20-22, which declares Christ as the firstfruits of them that slept. Because He lives, believers share in His triumph. The hymn emphasizes that death no longer holds dominion over those who belong to Christ. The resurrection is not merely symbolic, but a decisive event that changed the destiny of humanity.

Romans 6:9 affirms that Christ, being raised from the dead, dieth no more. Death hath no more dominion over Him. The hymn echoes this certainty, portraying Christ as the conqueror who has broken the chains of the grave. The refrain reinforces the theme of liberation, proclaiming that Christ has burst His three day prison.

Second Timothy 1:10 teaches that Christ “hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (KJV). This theological truth undergirds the hymn’s triumphant tone. Easter joy flows from the assurance that death has been defeated through the cross and resurrection.

Hebrews 2:14-15 explains that through death Christ destroyed him that had the power of death and delivered those who were subject to bondage through fear. The hymn reflects this freedom. The believer is no longer enslaved to fear of the grave, but lives in hope and confidence.

“This Joyful Eastertide” is commonly sung during the Easter season and is often paired with a lively tune that enhances its celebratory character. Its theology is clear and scriptural, focusing on Christ’s decisive victory and the believer’s participation in that triumph. Through strong proclamation and joyful refrain, the hymn calls the church to rejoice in the risen Lord who has conquered death and secured eternal life.
