The Still Small Voice
Lyrics
When life was new and skies were bright;
It spoke to me of destiny,
Of duty and of right.
Then other voices filled my ear,
And charmed my soul away:
Alas for me! I failed to heed
God’s gently voice that day.
That patient Voice, then tender Voice,
In ev’ry bosom pleads;
It is the Father’s voice of love, His voice of love,
And blest is he that heeds.
When sorrow came, with all her train;
Dark shadows fell where light had been,
And life was full of pain.
Above the tumult in my breast,
I heard that pleading Voice;
It spoke of pardon, peace and rest,
And made my heart rejoice.
Than e’en the sweetest melody;
It tells me of my Father’s love,
It cheers and comforts me;
It whispers how my feet should go
Along this earthly road;
It calls me on to holiness,
To Heaven and to God.
With heavy hearts and weary feet,
Upon the desert ways of sin,
Where rain and tempest beat;–
That Heav’nly Voice is calling you,
O listen, while ye may!
No longer harden ye your hearts,
But harken and obey.

About This Hymn
The Still Small Voice is a devotional hymn by Thomas O. Chisholm that reflects the quiet, gentle way in which God often speaks to His people. Drawing directly from the experience of Elijah at Horeb, the hymn emphasizes that the Lord is not always revealed through dramatic signs such as wind, earthquake, or fire, but through a calm and tender voice that reaches the heart. Chisholm presents this biblical truth in a pastoral and comforting manner, reminding believers that God’s guidance is frequently found in stillness and attentive listening rather than outward excitement.
The hymn highlights the contrast between human expectations and divine methods. Many seek God in noise, spectacle, or emotional intensity, yet Scripture teaches that spiritual discernment grows in moments of reverent quiet. By focusing on the still small voice, the text encourages believers to withdraw from distraction, cultivate inward devotion, and develop sensitivity to the Spirit’s leading through the Word of God. This aligns with Christ’s teaching that His sheep hear His voice and follow Him.
Chisholm’s writing reflects his broader theology of trust and daily dependence upon God. The hymn suggests that obedience flows naturally from hearing God rightly. When the believer listens humbly, the Lord gives direction, comfort, and correction with clarity and gentleness. The voice of God brings peace to troubled hearts, steadies faith in times of uncertainty, and reassures the soul of His abiding presence.
The Still Small Voice also carries a devotional challenge. It calls worshipers to examine whether they have made room in their lives for spiritual quietness. The hymn implies that neglecting prayer, Scripture meditation, and stillness can dull one’s ability to hear God clearly. In this way, the hymn serves not only as comfort but also as instruction in spiritual discipline.
Often used in personal devotion or reflective worship settings, this hymn invites believers to slow down before the Lord and listen attentively. It affirms that God is near, willing to speak, and faithful to guide those who seek Him with a quiet and obedient heart.
