Sunlight (I Wondered in the Shades of Night)

By Judson W. Van DeVenter

Lyrics

1. I wandered in the shades of night,
Till Jesus came to me,
And with the sunlight of His love
Bid all my darkness flee.
Refrain:
Sunlight, sunlight in my soul today,
Sunlight, sunlight all along the way;
Since the Savior found me
Took away my sin,
I have had the sunlight of his love within.
2. Tho' clouds may gather in the sky,
And billows round me roll,
However dark the world may be,
I've sunlight in my soul.
3. While walking in the light of God,
I sweet communion find;
O press with holy vigor on,
And leave the world behind.
4. I cross the wide-extended fields,
I journey o'er the plain,
And in the sunlight of His love
I reap the golden grain.
5. Soon I shall see Him as He is,
The light that came to me,
Behold the brightness of his face,
Thro'out eternity.

John 8:12; Psalm 119:105

About This Hymn

“Sunlight (I Wondered in the Shades of Night)” is a devotional hymn written by Judson W. Van De Venter in 1897. The text uses the metaphor of sunlight to represent Christ’s guiding presence, emphasizing the spiritual illumination and comfort He provides. Drawing from John 8:12, where Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world,” and Psalm 119:105, which portrays God’s Word as a lamp to the believer’s path, the hymn reflects on moving from darkness into divine light.

The opening stanza portrays the singer’s experience of wandering in spiritual darkness, feeling lost and uncertain. The refrain, set to the tune SUNLIGHT, expresses the joy and relief of finding Christ, who brings light and clarity. The hymn combines personal reflection with an invitation for others to experience the same spiritual awakening and guidance.

The melody SUNLIGHT, composed by W. S. Weeden, provides a bright and flowing musical setting that emphasizes the hope and warmth conveyed in the text. Its 8.6.8.6 meter with refrain allows for expressive phrasing and congregational participation, highlighting the contrast between the shadow of night and the brightness of Christ’s presence.

“Sunlight” continues to be used in worship services and personal devotion, especially in contexts emphasizing guidance, comfort, and the transformative power of Christ’s light. Its enduring appeal lies in its vivid imagery and devotional sincerity, encouraging believers to trust in the illuminating and sustaining presence of the Lord.
