One More Day's Work For Jesus

Anna Bartlett Warner (1824–1915) was an American hymn writer, poet, and author, best remembered for her beloved children’s hymn “Jesus Loves Me.” She was born on August 31, 1824, near New York City, the daughter of Henry W. Warner, and sister of Susan Warner, a well-known novelist. Together, the sisters were active in literary and religious work during the nineteenth century.

Warner spent much of her life on Constitution Island in the Hudson River, where she and her sister conducted Bible classes for cadets from the nearby United States Military Academy at West Point. Her life reflected a deep commitment to Christian teaching, particularly among young people, which greatly influenced her writing.

She was a prolific author, writing both fiction and devotional literature. Among her notable works is the novel Say and Seal (1859), in which the famous hymn “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know” first appeared. This simple yet profound hymn, grounded in the truth of Scripture, especially resonates with children and has become one of the most widely known Christian songs in the world.

In addition to her literary work, Warner contributed significantly to hymnody. She edited Hymns of the Church Militant (1858) and later published Wayfaring Hymns, Original and Translated (1869). Her hymns are marked by simplicity, warmth, and a strong devotional tone, often emphasizing trust in Christ, daily service, and childlike faith.
