Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
By Piotr Skarga
Lyrics
for His bed a cattle stall;
oxen lowing, little knowing
Christ, the babe, is Lord of all.
Swift are winging angels singing,
noels ringing, tidings bringing:
Christ the babe is Lord of all!
Christ the babe is Lord of all!
vigil till the morning new
saw the glory, heard the story,
tidings of the gospel true.
Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow,
praises voicing, greet the morrow:
Christ the babe was born for you;
Christ the babe was born for you.

About This Hymn
“Infant Holy, Infant Lowly” is a beloved Polish Christmas carol that traces its roots back to the late Renaissance or early Baroque period. The original Polish text, W zlobie lezy (“In the manger He lies”), is often attributed to Piotr Skarga, a Jesuit priest, preacher, and writer who was deeply influential in Poland during the Counter-Reformation. While some scholars debate the exact authorship, the carol’s Polish origins and devotional spirit are undisputed.
The hymn portrays the Nativity with a gentle simplicity, emphasizing Christ’s humility and the joy of His coming. The verses invite the worshiper to join in adoration of the Christ Child, echoing the shepherds who came to see Him in the manger. The melody, a traditional Polish folk tune, carries a lilting rhythm that makes the carol both tender and joyful. Its pastoral imagery, references to the manger, and call to rejoicing capture the essence of Luke’s Gospel account of the Savior’s birth.
The English version most widely known today was translated in the 20th century by Edith Margaret Reed (1885–1933), an English musician and linguist who had a deep love for Polish culture. Her translation, titled “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly,” preserved the beauty and rhythm of the Polish text while making it singable in English. The hymn has since become a staple in Christmas worship services and carol collections, valued for its combination of reverence, simplicity, and joyous proclamation of the incarnation.
