Hold the Fort
By Philip P. Bliss
Lyrics
Reinforcements now appearing, victory is nigh.
“Hold the fort, for I am coming,” Jesus signals still;
Wave the answer back to heaven, “By Thy grace we will.”
Mighty ones around us falling, courage almost gone!
In our Leader’s Name we triumph over every foe.
Onward comes our great Commander, cheer, my comrades, cheer!

About This Hymn
“But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.” — Revelation 2:25 (KJV)
Like many of Philip Paul Bliss’s powerful gospel hymns, “Hold the Fort” was born out of a compelling illustration, one that vividly brought Scripture to life during a Christian gathering. Bliss, a gifted composer and evangelist of the 19th century, was deeply moved when he heard Major Daniel W. Whittle, a fellow evangelist and Civil War veteran, speak at a YMCA meeting. Major Whittle was expounding on Revelation 2:25, emphasizing the believer’s need to remain faithful amid trials.
As part of his message, Major Whittle recounted a gripping scene from the American Civil War. A small detachment of Union troops had been assigned the critical task of guarding a large stockpile of supplies. However, they soon found themselves surrounded and under heavy pressure from a much larger Confederate force led by General French. When it seemed the Union men would have no choice but to surrender, they caught sight of a flag signal from General William Tecumseh Sherman, positioned on a distant hill. The signal read: “Hold the fort, I am coming. — Sherman.” Encouraged by this promise of reinforcements, the beleaguered soldiers stood their ground until help arrived.
This stirring account so captured Bliss’s imagination that he felt compelled to set the message to music. He later said he could not sleep that night until he had written both the lyrics and melody of the song. By the next morning, “Hold the Fort” was complete and ready to be shared.
At the following day’s YMCA service, Bliss introduced the new hymn to a gathering of delegates. The response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. The hymn’s vivid military imagery, combined with its resounding call for steadfastness in faith, deeply resonated with listeners. It quickly became one of the most beloved gospel songs of the Moody-Sankey revivals, both in the United States and Great Britain.
So powerful was the hymn’s impact that at the farewell meeting of Dwight L. Moody and Ira D. Sankey in London in 1874, Lord Shaftesbury, who presided over the service, remarked, “If Mr. Sankey has done no more than teach the people to sing ‘Hold the Fort,’ he has conferred inestimable blessing on the British Empire, and it would have been worth all the expense of these meetings.”
Though Philip Bliss himself did not consider “Hold the Fort” among his finest compositions, its legacy endures. His memorial in Rome, Pennsylvania, bears the simple yet poignant inscription: “P. P. Bliss, author of ‘Hold the Fort.’” The hymn remains a rousing anthem of spiritual perseverance and hope, reminding believers to remain faithful until the return of Christ, just as embattled soldiers once waited for the arrival of their commander.
In addition to “Hold the Fort,” Bliss authored several other enduring hymns, many of which continue to bless congregations today. These include “I Gave My Life for Thee” (No. 34), “It Is Well With My Soul” (No. 44), “Jesus Loves Even Me” (No. 46), “My Redeemer” (No. 59), “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning” (101 More Hymn Stories, No. 55), and “Once for All” (ibid., No. 72). His contributions to gospel music remain a treasured part of Christian heritage.
