God Is Working His Purpose Out
Lyrics
as year succeeds to year;
God is working this purpose out,
and the time is drawing near;
nearer and nearer draws the time,
the time that shall surely be:
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
where human feet have trod,
by the mouth of many messengers
goes forth the voice of God:
“Give ear to me, ye continents,
ye isles, give ear to me,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.”
with the banner of Christ unfurled,
that the light of the glorious gospel of truth
may shine throughout the world.
Let us all fight with sorrow and sin
to set the captives free,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
unless God blesses the deed.
Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide
till God gives life to the seed.
Yet nearer and nearer draws the time,
the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

About This Hymn
“God Is Working His Purpose Out” is a confident hymn of divine providence written by Arthur Campbell Ainger in 1894. The hymn reflects a strong biblical conviction that God sovereignly directs history according to His will, even when that purpose is not immediately visible. Ainger wrote the text during a period of social change and uncertainty, offering reassurance that God’s plan continues steadily toward its fulfillment.
The hymn emphasizes the certainty and perseverance of God’s purposes. Rather than portraying God’s work as hurried or fragile, the text presents it as sure, patient, and unstoppable. The imagery of God’s purpose unfolding “as year succeeds to year” underscores the truth that divine plans operate on a timescale beyond human impatience. This perspective encourages believers to trust God’s timing rather than demand immediate results.
A key theme of the hymn is human participation in God’s work. While God alone directs history, believers are called to cooperate faithfully with His purposes. The hymn urges Christians to labor diligently, trusting that their obedience plays a meaningful role in God’s larger design. This balance avoids both fatalism and self-reliance, affirming that God works through willing servants.
The hymn also carries a strong missionary vision. It anticipates a future in which God’s truth and justice fill the earth, echoing biblical promises that the knowledge of the Lord will spread among all nations. This forward-looking hope gives motivation for perseverance in service, prayer, and witness, even when progress seems slow or opposition strong.
“God Is Working His Purpose Out” remains a beloved hymn because it combines theological depth with pastoral encouragement. It reassures the church that history is not random or abandoned, but firmly held in God’s hands. The hymn calls believers to trust, obedience, and hope, resting in the certainty that God’s purposes will ultimately be fulfilled.
