Gabriel's Message
By S. Baring-Gould
Lyrics
his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
"All hail," said he to meek and lowly Mary,
"most highly favored maiden." Gloria!
a blessed virgin mother you shall be.
Your Son shall be Immanuel, by seers foretold,
most highly favored maiden." Gloria!
"To me be as it pleases God," she said.
"My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name."
Most highly favored maiden, Gloria!
In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say,
"Most highly favored maiden." Gloria!

About This Hymn
“Gabriel’s Message” is a traditional Basque carol, translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould in 1892. The hymn tells the story of the angel Gabriel’s visit to the Virgin Mary, announcing that she would conceive and bring forth Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It beautifully captures the humility of Mary, who responds in obedience to God’s will with the words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.”
Baring-Gould’s English rendering of this ancient carol preserves the reverence and simplicity of the original. The lyrics highlight Gabriel’s awe-inspiring message, Mary’s submission, and the glory of Christ’s coming. The refrain often emphasizes the blessing of Mary, chosen among women, through whom the Savior would enter the world. This makes the hymn especially meaningful during Advent and Christmas, as it focuses on the Incarnation and the miraculous fulfillment of God’s promise.
Over the years, “Gabriel’s Message” has become a beloved carol in both liturgical and popular settings. Its gentle, almost haunting melody underscores the mystery of the Annunciation. Frequently included in Christmas services, concerts, and recordings, it continues to remind believers of Mary’s faith and the wondrous plan of salvation accomplished through the coming of Christ.
