Facing a Task Unfinished

Frank Houghton (1894–1972) was an English Anglican clergyman, missionary leader, bishop, and hymn writer, best known for his service with the China Inland Mission and his contributions to Christian hymnody. Born on April 24, 1894, in Stafford, England, he was the son of a Church of England curate. He was educated at the University of London and the London College of Divinity (now St. John’s College, Nottingham), completing his theological training just before World War I. He was ordained as a deacon in 1917 and as a priest in 1918, beginning his ministry with curacies in Liverpool and Preston.

Inspired by the missionary example of Hudson Taylor, Houghton joined the China Inland Mission in 1920 and served in regions such as Liangshan and Suining (then often spelled Suiting). In 1923, he married Dorothy Cassels, daughter of a bishop in West China. He later became principal of a theological college in Paoning, Sichuan, helping to train local Christian leaders. Although he returned to England in 1928 for health reasons, what was meant to be a temporary stay became extended. During this time, he edited the influential missionary publication China’s Millions and served as Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of West China.

Houghton continued to hold significant leadership roles throughout his life. He was consecrated Bishop of East Szechwan in 1934, serving until 1940, and then became General Director of the China Inland Mission from 1940 to 1951, guiding the organization through a particularly challenging period that included World War II and political upheaval in China. After returning to parish ministry in England, he served as vicar and later as rector in various locations before retiring in 1963.

In addition to his missionary and pastoral work, Houghton was a respected hymn writer. His hymns often reflect missionary zeal, devotion, and commitment to Christ, aligning with his life’s work. He spent his retirement years in Poole, England, and died on January 25, 1972, in Tunbridge Wells. His legacy endures through his leadership in global missions and his contributions to Christian worship.
