Written by James George Deck, this baptismal hymn was first published in Psalms & Hymns (London, 1842, Part I, No. 277) in four stanzas of eight lines. It was included unaltered in Charles Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book (1866) and adapted with minor revisions by George Rawson for the Baptist Psalms and Hymns (1858).
