Before the Throne of God Above
By Charitie Lees Smith
Lyrics
I have a strong and perfect plea:
A great High Priest whose name is Love,
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on his hands,
My name is written on his heart.
I know that while in Heav'n he stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart,
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see him there,
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died,
My sinful soul is counted free,
For God the just is satisfied
To look on him and pardon me,
To look on him and pardon me.
My perfect, spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace.
One with himself I cannot die;
My soul is purchased by his blood.
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ, my Savior and my God,
With Christ, my Savior and my God.

About This Hymn
Before the Throne of God Above is a powerful hymn of assurance, deeply rooted in biblical truth and the finished work of Christ. The text was written by Charitie Lees Smith, later known as Charitie Lees Bancroft, a 19th-century Irish hymn writer born on June 21, 1841, in Bloomfield, Dublin. She was the daughter of Rev. Sidney Smith, rector of Drumragh in County Tyrone, Ireland. Raised in a devout Anglican home, Charitie began writing hymns at a young age. Her early works appeared in respected collections such as Lyra Britannica and Spiritual Songs compiled by Bishop J. C. Ryle.
"Before the Throne of God Above" was first published in 1863 under the title The Advocate, reflecting its strong emphasis on Christ's intercessory role for believers. The hymn beautifully portrays the believer's security and acceptance before God—not through personal merit, but through the righteousness and ongoing advocacy of Jesus Christ.
Though cherished by many over the years, the hymn experienced a revival in popularity after Vikki Cook of Sovereign Grace Music composed a new and widely beloved melody for it in 1997. The modern tune, rich and reverent, helped reintroduce the hymn to churches around the world, where it has become a staple in worship settings.
Its themes of justification, assurance, and Christ’s priestly intercession make it a deeply comforting hymn for worshipers of all ages.
