Around the Throne of God

By Henry Ware

Lyrics

1. Around the throne of God
The host angelic throngs;
They spread their palms abroad,
And shout perpetual songs:
Him first they own, Him last and best;
God ever blest, and God alone.
2. Their golden crowns they fling
Before His throne of light,
And strike the rapturous string
Unceasing, day and night:
"Earth, heaven, and sea, Thy praise declare;
For Thine they are, And Thine shall be.
3. "O Holy, Holy, Lord,
Creation's sovereign King!
Thy majesty adored,
Let all creation sing;
Who wast, and art, and art to be;
Nor time shall see Thy sway depart.
4. "Great are Thy works of praise,
O God of boundless might;
All just and true Thy ways,
Thou King of saints, in light:
Let all above, And all below,
Conspire to show Thy power and love.
5. "Who shall not fear Thee, Lord,
And magnify Thy Name?
Thy judgments, sent abroad,
Thy holiness proclaim:
Nations shall throng from every shore,
And all adore in one loud song."
6. While thus the powers on high
Their swelling chorus raise,
Let earth and man reply,
And echo back the praise:
His glory own, first, last, and best;
God ever blest, and God alone. Amen.

About This Hymn

“Around the Throne of God” is a hymn by Henry Ware Jr. that reflects on the worship and majesty surrounding the throne of God in heaven. The hymn draws upon biblical visions of heavenly praise and invites believers to contemplate the glory, holiness, and sovereignty of God. Its tone is reverent and uplifting, directing the worshipper’s attention from earthly concerns to the eternal worship taking place before God’s throne.

The hymn is strongly influenced by Revelation 4:2-11, where John describes the heavenly throne surrounded by worshippers who continually glorify God. Ware reflects this scene of majesty and adoration, emphasizing the greatness of God as Creator and King. The throne symbolizes God’s supreme authority and eternal reign over all things.

Revelation 5:11-13 expands this vision with countless angels and every creature in heaven and earth praising God and the Lamb. The hymn echoes this universal worship, portraying heaven as filled with songs of praise and honor. Believers are invited to join spiritually in this eternal chorus of worship.

Isaiah 6:1-3 provides another important background, with the prophet’s vision of the Lord seated upon His throne while the seraphim cry, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts” (KJV). The hymn reflects this emphasis on divine holiness, inspiring reverence and awe in the presence of God.

Hebrews 12:22-24 speaks of believers coming spiritually to the heavenly Jerusalem and to the assembly around God’s throne. The hymn aligns with this teaching by reminding worshippers that Christian worship on earth is connected to the greater worship of heaven.

“Around the Throne of God” is a hymn of heavenly contemplation and praise. It encourages believers to lift their hearts above earthly distractions and to focus on the eternal glory of God. Through its rich biblical imagery and worshipful tone, the hymn calls the church to adore the Lord who reigns forever upon His throne, surrounded by ceaseless praise from heaven and earth.
