A Man There Lived in Galilee

By Somerset Corry Lowry

Lyrics

1. A man there lived in Galilee
like none who lived before,
for he alone from first to last
our flesh unblemished wore;
a perfect life of perfect deeds
once to the world was shown,
that people all might mark his steps
and in them plant their own.
2. A man there died on Calvary
above all others brave;
the human race he saved and blessed,
himself he scorned to save.
No thought can gauge the weight of woe
on him, the sinless, laid;
we only know that with his blood
our ransom price was paid.
3. A man there reigns in glory now,
divine, yet human still;
that human which is all divine
death sought in vain to kill.
All pow'r is his; supreme he rules
the realms of time and space;
yet still our human cares and needs
find in his heart a place.

About This Hymn

Somerset Corry Lowry wrote this hymn as a clear and reverent portrait of the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. It reflects on the compassion, purity, and power that marked the life of the Savior while He walked among men. The hymn draws the singer’s attention to the humanity of Christ as He healed the sick, comforted the broken, lifted the fallen, and revealed the character of God through every word and action. Lowry’s text is simple, yet deeply reverent, presenting Jesus as the perfect model of holiness and love.

The hymn is closely connected to Acts 10:38, which declares that Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed. Lowry builds on this scriptural truth by showing how the daily life of Christ displayed the mercy and righteousness of God. Each stanza lifts up aspects of His ministry that reveal His compassion for the suffering, His tenderness toward the weak, and His unwavering obedience to the will of His Father. These qualities invite the believer to recognize the beauty of Christ’s character and to follow Him with sincere devotion.

Lowry guides the singer from the earthly ministry of Jesus to its meaning for believers today. The hymn reminds us that the same Lord who walked the roads of Galilee continues to work in the hearts of those who trust Him. His kindness, power, and truth remain unchanged. As believers meditate on the life of Christ, they are encouraged to imitate His humility, love, and service. The hymn inspires a deeper appreciation for the Savior who not only showed the way to God but also opened the way through His redeeming work.

The devotional tone of the hymn leads the heart toward worship and gratitude. It is both a remembrance of Christ’s compassion and a call to reflect that compassion in daily life. Through its gentle language and scriptural foundation, A Man There Lived in Galilee continues to help worshipers focus on the beauty of Jesus and the hope found in His life and example.
