About J. R. Peacey

John Raphael (J. R.) Peacey (1896–1971) was a distinguished English clergyman and educator who emerged as one of the most influential "modern" hymn writers in the mid-20th century. Educated at Keble College, Oxford, Peacey was ordained in the Church of England and served in various high-profile roles, including as the Headmaster of Bishop’s College, Calcutta, and as a Canon of Bristol Cathedral. His hymns are noted for their theological precision, rhythmic vigor, and their ability to bridge the gap between traditional liturgical structures and contemporary language.

Peacey’s work gained significant traction during the "hymn explosion" of the 1960s and 70s, a period when the church sought fresh texts to reflect a more global and socially conscious faith. One of his most enduring contributions is "Go forth for God, go to the world in peace." Often used as a recessional or "dismissal" hymn, its strong, assertive meter encourages the congregation to carry their faith into the secular world. Another widely used text, "Filled with the Spirit's power, with one accord," is a staple for the feast of Pentecost, celebrated for its focus on the communal and outward-facing nature of the Holy Spirit's work.

Unlike many of his Victorian predecessors, Peacey’s writing often avoided sentimental imagery, opting instead for a "muscular" Christianity. His hymn "Awake, awake, fling off the night" utilizes powerful, light-based metaphors to challenge the believer toward moral and spiritual renewal. His work also showed a deep respect for the traditional church calendar and figures; for example, his hymn "For Mary, mother of our Lord" is considered a model of balanced, ecumenical writing, honoring the role of the Virgin Mary while remaining rooted in broader Protestant and Anglican sensibilities.

Peacey’s hymns are frequently paired with "strong" tunes—often those by composers like Cyril Taylor or traditional English melodies—which complement the sturdy architecture of his verse. Though he died in 1971, his legacy was cemented posthumously through the publication of his collected hymns, Go Forth for God (1984). Today, his texts appear in almost every major modern English-language hymnal, ensuring that his voice continues to guide congregations in their transition from the sanctuary to the streets.
