To God Be the Glory
By Fanny Crosby
Lyrics
so loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
and give Him the glory, great things He hath done.
to ev'ry believer the promise of God;
the vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer, and higher, and greater will be
our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

About This Hymn
“To God Be the Glory” is one of the most beloved hymns in Christian worship, written by the prolific hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby (1820–1915), with music composed by William H. Doane (1832–1915). The hymn is a triumphant declaration of praise, celebrating the greatness of God and the redemptive work accomplished through Jesus Christ. Its powerful themes of salvation, divine love, and worshipful gratitude have made it a lasting favorite across denominations and generations.
The text was first published in 1875 in a collection titled Brightest and Best, compiled by Robert Lowry and William Doane. Although popular in the United Kingdom during the evangelistic campaigns of Dwight L. Moody and Ira Sankey in the 1870s, the hymn remained relatively unknown in the United States until nearly 80 years later. Its reintroduction to American audiences came during the 1954 Billy Graham Crusade in London, where it was used as one of the featured congregational songs. Song leader Cliff Barrows included it by suggestion and found that it resonated deeply with the audience. From that moment, “To God Be the Glory” quickly gained favor and was incorporated into Graham’s crusades and eventually into hymnals and churches around the world.
The hymn begins with the line, “To God be the glory, great things He hath done,” immediately setting the tone for a hymn of exultation and gratitude. This line, and the refrain that follows each verse, invites both heaven and earth to join in acknowledging God’s marvelous deeds. What distinguishes this hymn from many others by Crosby is its focus on the greatness of God, rather than on personal testimony. Rather than a reflective or emotional appeal, this hymn is a robust, public, and doctrinally rich expression of Christian faith.
The first verse focuses on the foundational truth of the gospel: that God so loved the world, He gave His Son for our redemption. It acknowledges that through Jesus' atonement, the “life gate” has been opened to all who believe. The second verse continues this theme, emphasizing that even the vilest sinner, upon sincere belief, can receive pardon and full forgiveness. It is a hymn that speaks to both the justice and mercy of God, offering hope and assurance to all who come to Him in faith. The third verse lifts the worshiper’s gaze from earthly forgiveness to heavenly joy, declaring the future hope of seeing the Savior and giving Him eternal praise.
The accompanying tune, composed by William H. Doane, is bright and majestic, matching the jubilant spirit of the lyrics. Doane was a skilled composer and close friend of Crosby, and he worked with her on many hymns. His musical setting here is both singable and stirring, designed to encourage full participation by a congregation in worship. The refrain, “Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice,” echoes the call of Psalm 150 and other Old Testament passages that summon all creation to praise the Lord.
“To God Be the Glory” is now included in hundreds of hymnals around the world. Its message remains as clear and compelling today as it was when first written: all glory belongs to God, for He has done great things. Through Jesus Christ, He has made salvation possible for all who believe. The hymn encourages believers not only to rejoice in their personal salvation but also to lift their voices in global, corporate praise for the mighty acts of God.
