Hymns about Salvation

Salvation is the great deliverance God works for sinners through Jesus Christ. It includes forgiveness, reconciliation, new life, and the sure hope of glory. Scripture declares that by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Hymns of salvation therefore celebrate what God has done, not what man has earned. They keep the church singing the gospel in clear and grateful tones.

Across the canon, salvation is pictured as rescue from wrath, redemption from bondage, healing from disease, and adoption into the household of God. The New Testament gathers these images around the cross and resurrection. Songs of salvation often intertwine with Grace, Faith, Repentance, Conversion, New Birth, Redemption, and Atonement, for each names a facet of the one saving work. Hymnody here is evangelistic and doxological at once: it calls the lost and it magnifies the Savior.

In congregational use, salvation hymns fit baptisms, missionary services, invitations to faith, and ordinary praise that simply rejoices in the Lord. In private reading they reassure the doubting and instruct the young. They remind seasoned believers that the Christian life begins and continues in the same mercy.

To sing salvation is to confess that the Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad. Let these hymns keep that gladness pure, Scripture-shaped, and centered on Christ alone.
