Hymns about God the Father

God the Father is the first Person of the Holy Trinity, the fountain of deity, the Maker of heaven and earth, and the One from whom every good and perfect gift descends. Scripture reveals Him as the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and, by adoption, the Father of all who believe. He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; He elects, provides, disciplines, and keeps His children according to His wise and holy will. To know God as Father is not to diminish His majesty, but to receive the gospel privilege of approaching Him through the Son by the Spirit, crying, Abba, Father. Biblical faith holds together His nearness and His transcendence, His tenderness and His sovereign rule.

Hymns addressed to God the Father, or celebrating His fatherly care, help the church pray with confidence and humility. They often speak of providence, fatherly compassion, wise counsel, and steadfast love from everlasting to everlasting. Congregations singing such hymns learn to trust the Father's heart even when His ways are past finding out. These songs also guard Trinitarian worship, reminding believers that Christian praise is offered to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.

Use these hymns in services of prayer, thanksgiving for providence, and teaching on the Trinity. In family worship and private devotion they encourage orphaned or anxious hearts to rest in paternal care that never fails.
