Sent Forth by God's Blessing

By Omer Westendorf

Lyrics

1. Sent forth by God’s blessing,
Our true faith confessing,
The people of God from His dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended.
Oh, now be extended
The fruits of this service in all who believe.

2 The seed of His teaching,
Receptive souls reaching,
Shall blossom in action for God and for all.
His grace did invite us,
His love shall unite us
To work for God’s kingdom and answer His call.

3 With praise and thanksgiving
To God ever living,
The tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing,
In love ever caring,
Embracing His children of each tribe and race.

4 With Your feast You feed us,
With Your light now lead us;
Unite us as one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living
With praise and thanks giving
Give honor to Christ and His name that we bear.

Matthew 28:19–20; Hebrews 13:15–16; James 1:22; Colossians 3:16–17

About This Hymn

Sent Forth by God’s Blessing is a well-loved post-communion and closing hymn that emphasizes the inseparable connection between worship and daily Christian living. Written by Omer Westendorf in the mid twentieth century, the hymn reflects a pastoral concern that the gathered Church should not view worship as an end in itself, but as a sending into the world for faithful service. The hymn gives voice to the biblical pattern in which God gathers His people to feed them by His Word and sacrament, then sends them out to live what they have received.

The opening stanza focuses on the conclusion of corporate worship. The service has ended, yet its purpose continues. Confession of faith is not confined to the sanctuary, but is meant to shape the believer’s entire life. The fruits of worship are expected to appear in obedience, charity, and witness. This reflects the teaching of Scripture that true faith produces visible fruit and that hearing the Word must lead to doing it.

The second stanza develops the image of God’s Word as seed. When received by receptive hearts, divine teaching grows into action that serves both God and neighbor. Grace initiates this work, love sustains it, and unity strengthens it. The Church is presented as a people called together not merely for mutual encouragement, but for participation in God’s kingdom purposes.

The third stanza turns toward daily vocation. Praise and thanksgiving do not replace ordinary responsibilities, but rather shape how those responsibilities are carried out. Faith is to be shared openly, love practiced consistently, and care extended across all human divisions. The hymn strongly affirms the biblical vision of the Church as one body drawn from every tribe and race, united in Christ.

The final stanza returns to God as the source of all strength. Having been fed at His table and guided by His light, believers pray for unity and perseverance. The hymn ends with a doxological focus, expressing the desire that all living things would honor Christ through the lives of His people. Sent Forth by God’s Blessing remains enduringly relevant because it reminds the Church that worship naturally leads to mission, obedience, and thankful service in the world.
