Resurrection Hymn
Lyrics
Shout, ye his saints the blest story;
Fill the whole earth with this joyful refrain,
With rapture repeat it again and again,
"Christ our Redeemer, the mighty to save,
Hath gloriously triumphed o'er sin and the grave;"
Let loud hallelujahs in chorus arise
To him who now dwelleth above in the skies.
Shadows and darkness around him,
Held as a captive within Death's domain,
In that hewn grave where man never had lain;
Sealed was its portal, unbroken its gloom,
Yet by his presence he hallowed the tomb;
And in deep silence enshrouded he lay,
While angels kept guard till the third dawning day.
Hail! to thy name ever glorious,
Worship and honor to thee doth belong,
All nations uniting thy praises prolong;
Thou hast arisen to die nevermore,
Thou holdest the key to Death's dark prison door;
Our heart's adoration in anthems we sing
To thee, our Deliv'rer, our Prophet and King.

About This Hymn
“Resurrection Hymn,” written by Ella E. Miles in the late nineteenth century, is a joyful and confident proclamation of Christ’s victory over death and the believer’s living hope in a risen Savior. Miles, known for her clear gospel emphasis and devotional warmth, crafted this hymn to celebrate the central truth of Christianity, that Jesus Christ is alive forevermore. The text directs attention away from the grave and toward the triumph of the empty tomb, echoing the angelic announcement that He is not here, for He is risen.
The hymn presents the resurrection not merely as a historical event, but as a present and powerful reality for every believer. Christ’s rising from the dead is shown as the foundation of assurance, forgiveness, and eternal life. Drawing from passages such as John 11 and 1 Corinthians 15, the hymn affirms that because Christ lives, His people also shall live. Death is no longer portrayed as a final enemy, but as a defeated foe, overcome by the life-giving power of the Son of God.
A strong feature of the hymn is its emphasis on personal faith and joyful testimony. The singer is invited to respond to the resurrection with praise, trust, and steadfast hope. Miles connects the doctrine of the resurrection with daily Christian living, reminding believers that the risen Christ walks with them, sustains them, and will one day raise them bodily in glory. This pastoral tone makes the hymn especially suitable for Easter services, funerals, and occasions that call for comfort rooted in gospel truth.
Overall, “Resurrection Hymn” stands as a clear and uplifting confession of faith in the living Christ. It reinforces the biblical teaching that the resurrection is the heart of the gospel and the guarantee of the believer’s future glory. By pointing consistently to Christ’s triumph over the grave, the hymn encourages the church to sing with confidence, gratitude, and unshakable hope in the Lord who lives forever.
