Prepare Us for That Day
By J. Hart
Lyrics
The Judge prepares to come;
The archangel sounds the dreadful trump,
And wakes the general doom.
Her dissolution mourns;
Blushes of blood the moon deface;
The sun to darkness turns.
The frighted dead arise,
Start from the monumental bed,
And lift their ghastly eyes.
They quake, they shriek, they cry;
Bid rocks and mountains on them fall,
But rocks and mountains fly.
Prepare us for that day;
Help us in Jesus to believe,
To watch, and wait, and pray.

About This Hymn
“Prepare Us for That Day” reflects the earnest and searching theology of Joseph Hart, an eighteenth century English hymn writer associated with evangelical Calvinism. Hart was deeply conscious of human sinfulness and divine grace, and his hymns frequently urge serious self examination in light of eternity. This text centers on the coming day of judgment and the believer’s readiness to stand before God.
The title echoes Amos 4:12, “Prepare to meet thy God” (KJV). Hart understood that the day of meeting God is certain and unavoidable. The hymn does not treat the final judgment lightly. Instead, it presents it as a solemn reality that should stir repentance and faith. Hart’s concern is pastoral. He calls sinners to seek refuge in Christ before that great day arrives.
Second Corinthians 5:10 teaches, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.” This universal accountability shapes the hymn’s tone. Hart does not suggest that preparation can be achieved through personal merit or religious effort. Rather, true preparation is found in union with Christ. Only those clothed in His righteousness can stand with confidence before a holy God.
Matthew 25:31-34 describes the Son of man coming in glory to judge the nations. The hymn reflects both the majesty and the mercy of that scene. For those outside of Christ, the day is fearful. For those redeemed by grace, it is a day of vindication and welcome. Hart emphasizes that salvation is entirely of grace, urging hearers to flee to Christ while the door of mercy remains open.
First John 2:28 exhorts believers, “And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.” The hymn aligns with this call to abiding faith. Preparation for that day is not merely a past decision, but a present life of dependence upon Christ.
“Prepare Us for That Day” serves as both warning and comfort. It warns against spiritual complacency and false security. It comforts by directing sinners to the sufficiency of Christ’s atonement. Hart’s message is clear: the day of judgment is certain, but those who trust in Christ need not fear, for He Himself is their righteousness and their hope in that final hour.
