On the Mountain's Top Appearing
By Thomas Kelly
Lyrics
Lo! the sacred herald stands;
Welcome news to Zion bearing,
Zion long in hostile lands.
Mourning captive!
God himself will loose your bands.
All your friends unfaithful proved?
Have your foes been proud and scornful,
By your sighs and tears unmoved?
Cease your mourning,
Zion still is well beloved.
He himself appears your friend:
All your foes shall flee before you;
Here their boasts and triumphs end;
Great deliv'rance
Zion's King vouchsafes to send.
All your wrongs shall be redressed;
For you shame you shall have double,
In your Maker's favor blest;
All your conflicts
End in everlasting rest.

About This Hymn
Thomas Kelly’s hymn, On the Mountain's Top Appearing, celebrates the prophetic vision of Christ’s glory and the ultimate establishment of God’s kingdom. Drawing inspiration from Isaiah 2:2-3, the hymn speaks of the mountain of the Lord being exalted above all hills, symbolizing the coming reign of Christ that will bring peace and justice to the world. The imagery of the mountain conveys majesty, stability, and divine revelation, pointing believers toward hope and anticipation of the Savior’s return.
The hymn emphasizes the universality of God’s call, inviting all nations to learn His ways and walk in His paths. It also resonates with Matthew 24:30, reminding Christians of the visible, triumphant return of Christ to the world. Through its poetic verses, Kelly encourages faith, steadfastness, and spiritual readiness, calling believers to prepare their hearts for the coming of the Lord.
Singing this hymn strengthens the believer’s vision of God’s eternal plan, inspiring hope in God’s promises, joy in His ultimate triumph, and commitment to live in light of His coming kingdom.
