Nothing But the Blood of Jesus
By Robert Lowry
Lyrics
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
no other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my cleansing this my plea:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Naught of good that I have done:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my righteousness:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.

About This Hymn
"Nothing but the Blood of Jesus" is one of the most enduring gospel hymns in the Christian tradition, powerfully affirming the exclusive efficacy of Christ's blood in securing redemption for sinful humanity. Written in 1876 by Robert Lowry, this hymn was first published in Gospel Hymns, a compilation edited by Lowry and his collaborator William H. Doane. The original publication featured a reference to Hebrews 9:22 beneath the title: "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin." This verse clearly sets the tone for the hymn's central message. From its opening line to its final refrain, the hymn proclaims that cleansing from sin and reconciliation with God come only through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Robert Lowry, a prominent Baptist preacher and composer, was living in Plainfield, New Jersey, at the time he wrote both the words and the music for this hymn. He had recently begun pastoring a Baptist congregation there, and he would continue his ministry in that community for the rest of his life. A skilled writer of gospel music, Lowry composed many other well-loved hymns, including “Shall We Gather at the River?” and “Christ Arose.” His ability to write memorable, singable tunes with strong theological content made his hymns a staple in American evangelical hymnody.
The hymn originally contained six stanzas. However, in most modern hymnals only the first four are commonly sung. The omitted verses begin with “Now by this I’ll overcome” and “Glory! Glory! This I sing.” These additional stanzas continue the theme of Christ’s victorious work through His blood, but they are less frequently included in congregational settings. Each stanza concludes with the well-known refrain, "Nothing but the blood of Jesus," which reinforces the central theological truth that Christ’s atonement is complete and sufficient.
The hymn's theme centers on the redemptive work of Christ, specifically highlighting the shedding of His blood as the sole means of salvation. The lyrics reject any notion that good works or moral behavior can save a person. In stanza three, the line “Naught of good that I have done” makes it clear that redemption is not earned by human effort. Instead, salvation is entirely dependent on the sacrificial death of Jesus. This message resonates deeply with the gospel accounts and the teachings of the New Testament, which consistently emphasize that forgiveness and reconciliation come only through faith in Christ’s finished work.
Musically, the hymn is paired with a tune that Lowry also composed, named "Plainfield" after the town in which he resided. The melody is pentatonic and constructed within a narrow range of a fifth, which makes it accessible for congregational singing. Its simplicity has contributed greatly to the hymn’s popularity in churches, children's Sunday school classes, and evangelistic meetings. The repetition of phrases and limited melodic movement allow worshipers of all ages to sing the hymn with ease and enthusiasm.
"Nothing but the Blood of Jesus" is suitable for use throughout the Christian year, particularly in services that emphasize redemption, forgiveness, or the significance of the cross. It is often sung during Communion services, Lent, Good Friday observances, or any worship gathering that highlights the saving power of Christ. The hymn is also a favorite in children’s ministries, where its clear message and repetitive structure help young hearts grasp the essence of the gospel. It is sometimes presented in a call-and-response format, with a leader singing the verses and the congregation responding with the recurring line.
Over time, this hymn has also inspired instrumental settings and choral medleys. Arrangements such as handbell versions or gospel medleys that include other hymns like “Are You Washed in the Blood?” and “There Is Power in the Blood” help to emphasize the rich theme of Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Whether sung simply with a congregation or elaborately performed with instrumental accompaniment, “Nothing but the Blood of Jesus” continues to testify to the timeless truth of the gospel. Its enduring message calls all believers to remember and rejoice in the cleansing power found only in the blood of Christ.
