Lord, With Glowing Heart I'd Praise Thee

By Francis Scott Key

Lyrics

1. Lord, with glowing heart I'd praise thee
for the bliss thy love bestows,
for the pard'ning grace that saves me,
and the peace that from it flows.
Help, O God, my weak endeavor;
this dull soul to rapture raise;
thou must light the flame, or never
can my love be warmed to praise.
2. Praise, my soul, the God that sought thee,
wretched wand'rer far astray;
found thee lost, and kindly brought thee
from the paths of death away.
Praise, with love's devoutest feeling,
him who saw thy guilt-born fear,
and, the light of hope revealing,
bade the blood-stained cross appear.
3. Praise thy Savior God that drew thee
to that cross, new life to give,
held a blood sealed pardon to thee,
bade thee look to him and live.
Praise the grace whose threats alarmed thee,
roused thee from thy fatal ease;
praise the grace whose promise warmed thee,
praise the grace that whispered peace.
4. Lord, this bosom's ardent feeling
vainly would my lips express:
low before thy footstool kneeling,
deign thy suppliant's pray'r to bless.
Let thy love, my soul's chief treasure,
love's pure flame within me raise;
and, since words can never measure,
let my life show forth thy praise.

Psalm 103:1-5; Psalm 95:1-7; Hebrews 13:15

About This Hymn

Lord, With Glowing Heart I’d Praise Thee is a classic hymn of joyful thanksgiving and reverent praise that unites rich biblical language with a noble and dignified melody. The text was written by Francis Scott Key, best known for The Star-Spangled Banner, and reflects his deep Christian faith and devotion. The hymn is commonly sung to the tune ST. LEONARDS, composed by John H. Willcox in the mid nineteenth century, a melody that reinforces the hymn’s stately and heartfelt tone.

The hymn opens with an expression of personal gratitude, calling the worshiper to bless the Lord with a full and thankful heart. This mirrors the language of Psalm 103, where the believer is exhorted to bless the Lord and not forget all His benefits. Praise here is not shallow enthusiasm, but a thoughtful response to God’s mercy, protection, and sustaining grace throughout life.

As the hymn unfolds, it moves from personal devotion to public worship. The singer joins the gathered people of God in offering praise, echoing the corporate call to worship found in Psalm 95. Thanksgiving is portrayed as both an individual duty and a communal joy, rooted in remembrance of God’s faithful dealings with His people.

Theologically, the hymn emphasizes gratitude as a central Christian virtue. Praise is offered not to earn favor, but as a sacrifice of thanksgiving flowing from a redeemed heart, in harmony with Hebrews 13. The language is warm and expressive, yet firmly grounded in reverence, making the hymn suitable for both festive services and regular congregational worship.

Lord, With Glowing Heart I’d Praise Thee remains a valuable hymn for the church, reminding believers that heartfelt praise is the natural response to God’s steadfast love, and that true worship rises from gratitude shaped by Scripture and faith.
