Hiding in Thee

By W. O. Cushing

Lyrics

1. O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
my soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly.
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine would I be.
Thou blest Rock of Ages, I'm hiding in Thee.
Refrain:
Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest Rock of Ages, I'm hiding in Thee.
2. In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow's lone hour;
in times when temptation casts o'er me its pow'r,
in the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest Rock of Ages, I'm hiding in Thee.
3. How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I've fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe.
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
I've hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.

About This Hymn

The hymn Hiding in Thee was written by William Orcutt Cushing in 1876 and set to music by Ira David Sankey, one of the most influential gospel composers of the nineteenth century. This hymn was born out of Cushing’s deep personal experience with suffering and his abiding trust in God as his refuge. After losing his wife and, later, his voice due to a paralysis of the vocal cords, Cushing dedicated the remainder of his life to hymn writing, producing over 300 gospel songs. “Hiding in Thee” stands out as a heartfelt testimony of the believer’s need for a secure and constant refuge in times of distress, temptation, and weariness.

The text reflects the imagery of Psalm 32:7 and other scriptures that present God as the believer’s shelter and protection. Cushing’s repeated phrase “Hiding in Thee” captures the continual and personal act of retreating into the safety of God’s presence. The hymn’s three verses build on this theme: the first emphasizes refuge from the storms of life, the second acknowledges the need for safety from temptation and grief, and the third affirms the believer’s settled confidence in God as the ultimate hiding place. This repetition reinforces the idea that no matter the nature of the trial, the solution remains the same, to find rest and protection in the Lord.

Ira Sankey’s 4/4 meter melody for Hiding in Thee carries the text with a gentle, flowing line that is both meditative and singable, making it ideal for personal devotion as well as congregational singing. Its reflective yet resolute tune matches the lyrics’ tone of quiet assurance. Through its enduring message and tender music, Hiding in Thee has comforted generations of believers, pointing them to the unchanging safety and peace found in Christ, the Rock of Ages.
