Hear Our Prayer, O Heavenly Father

By Harriet Parr

Lyrics

1. Hear my prayer, O Heavenly Father,
Ere I lay me down to sleep;
Bid Thy angels, pure and holy,
Round my bed their vigil keep.
2. Great my sins are, but Thy mercy
Far outweighs them everyone;
Down before Thy cross I cast them,
Trusting in Thy help alone.
3. Keep me, through this night of peril,
Underneath its boundless shade;
Take me to Thy rest, I pray Thee,
When my pilgrimage is made.
4. None shall measure out Thy patience,
By the span of human thought;
None shall bound the tender mercies
Which Thy Holy Son hath wrought.
5. Pardon all my past transgressions;
Give me strength for days to come;
Guide and guard me with Thy blessing,
Till Thine angels bid me home.

About This Hymn

“Hear Our Prayer, O Heavenly Father” was written by Harriet Parr in 1856 as a gentle and humble prayer hymn that leads the believer into quiet communion with God. Parr, an English writer who produced devotional poetry and hymns marked by tenderness and simplicity, crafted this hymn to help worshippers express trust in God’s attentive care. Its tone is reflective and reverent, inviting the heart to approach the Lord with confidence in His mercy.

The hymn draws from the biblical plea found in Psalm 143:1, where the psalmist says, “Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.” Parr’s lyrics echo this scriptural cry by acknowledging human weakness and the need for divine help. She reminds believers that God is compassionate and ready to hear the prayers of His children, especially in moments of sorrow, doubt, or fear.

Throughout the hymn, Parr emphasizes the closeness of God to His people. He listens to the faintest cry, understands unspoken burdens, and responds according to His perfect wisdom. The hymn encourages believers to bring every concern to the Father, trusting that He is both able and willing to provide peace, comfort, and guidance. Its calm rhythm and thoughtful words help settle the heart and restore spiritual focus.

In worship settings, this hymn often functions as a prayer before Scripture reading or pastoral intercession. Its warm devotional quality makes it equally suited for personal meditation. Parr’s work endures because it gives voice to a timeless truth. God hears, God understands, and God answers. Through this hymn, the believer is reminded that prayer is not an empty ritual but a real approach to a loving Father who delights in caring for His children.
