Have You Any Room For Jesus
By D. W. Whittle
Lyrics
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinner, will you let Him in?
Room for Jesus, King of Glory!
Hasten now, His Word obey.
Swing the heart’s door widely open;
Bid Him enter while you may.
But for Christ, the Crucified,
Not a place that He can enter,
In the heart for which He died?
Soon will pass God’s day of grace -
Soon your heart left cold and silent,
And your Savior’s pleading cease.
Swing the heart's door widely open;
Bid Him enter while you may, while you may.

About This Hymn
“Have You Any Room for Jesus” is a solemn invitation hymn written by Daniel W. Whittle in the late nineteenth century. Rooted in the image of Luke 2:7, where the Savior found no room in the inn at His birth, the hymn asks if the singer will now make room for Christ in the heart. The verses are written in the form of direct appeal, almost as if Christ Himself is standing outside the door, waiting to be welcomed in. Its refrain, repeating the question of whether there is room for Jesus, emphasizes the urgency of the call, for opportunities to receive Him are not endless.
The hymn reflects the evangelistic spirit of its time, when revival meetings often used such searching songs to encourage decision for Christ. It presses the listener to consider whether worldly pursuits, selfish desires, or neglect of spiritual things have crowded out the Lord. The simplicity of the text makes the message unavoidable: each soul must decide whether to open the door to Christ now, while there is still time. The hymn harmonizes with Revelation 3:20, where Christ says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.”
Through the years, “Have You Any Room for Jesus” has remained a powerful song of invitation, often sung during altar calls and evangelistic services. Its enduring message continues to convict and comfort, reminding Christians and seekers alike that Christ is not distant or unwilling but is ready to enter the heart that will welcome Him. The hymn is both a call to repentance and a reminder of the Savior’s love, urging every hearer to yield to Him today before life’s opportunities pass away.
