Hail Thee, Festival Day
By Venantius Honorius Clementianus Fortunatus
Lyrics
Refrain:
Hail thee, festival day!
Blessed day to be hallowed forever;
Day when our Lord was raised,
Breaking the kingdom of death.
1 Lo, the fair beauty of the earth,
From the death of the winter arising!
Every good gift of the year
Now with its master returns.
2 Rise from the grave now, O Lord,
The author of life and creation.
Treading the pathway of death,
New life You give to us all.
ASCENSION
Refrain:
Hail thee, festival day!
Blessed day to be hallowed forever;
Day when our risen Lord
Rose in the heavens to reign.
3. He who was nailed to the cross
Is ruler and Lord of all people.
All things created on earth
Sing to the glory of God.
4. Daily the loveliness grows,
Adorned with glory of blossom;
Heaven her gates unbars,
Flinging her increase of light.
PENTECOST
Refrain:
Hail thee, festival day!
Blessed day to be hallowed forever;
Day when the Holy Ghost
Shone in the world full of grace.
5 Bright and in the likeness of fire,
On those who await your appearing,
You whom the Lord had foretold
Suddenly, swiftly descend.
6 Forth from the Father You come
With sevenfold mystical offering,
Pouring on all human souls
Infinite riches of God.
ALL OCCASIONS
7 God the almighty Lord,
The ruler of earth and the heavens,
Guard us from harm without;
Cleanse us from evil within.
8 Jesus the health of the world,
Enlighten our minds, great Redeemer,
Son of the Father supreme,
Only begotten of God.
9 Spirit of life and of power,
Now flow in us, fount of our being,
Light that enlightens us all,
Life that in all may abide.
10 Praise to the giver of good!
O lover and author of concord,
Pour out your balm on our days;
Order our ways in your peace.

About This Hymn
“Hail Thee, Festival Day” is a hymn attributed to Venantius Honorius Clementianus Fortunatus, a Latin poet and bishop of the early medieval church. Fortunatus was born in Italy and later became bishop of Poitiers in Gaul. He is known for several important Latin hymns that were written for major Christian festivals and widely used in the worship of the early church.
The hymn originally appeared as part of a longer Latin poem titled Salve festa dies, which celebrates the great events of the Christian faith. Various sections of the poem were adapted for use in worship during different seasons of the church year, particularly Easter and Pentecost. The hymn celebrates the joyful victory of Christ and the significance of the Christian festival being observed.
One central theme of the hymn is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This reflects the message of Matthew 28:5–6, where the angel announces to the women at the tomb that Jesus is not there because He has risen from the dead. The hymn celebrates this victory over death and the joy that the resurrection brings to believers.
Another theme is the triumph of Christ described in Revelation 1:18, where the risen Lord declares that He was dead but now lives forever and holds the keys of death and the grave. The hymn reflects the early church’s proclamation that Christ’s resurrection marks the beginning of a new and victorious life for those who believe in Him.
The hymn has also been associated with Pentecost celebrations, connecting with Acts 2:1–4, which records the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. Through the Spirit’s work, the church is empowered to proclaim the gospel and continue the mission of Christ.
In addition, the hymn relates to the teaching of 1 Corinthians 15:20–22, where Christ is described as the firstfruits of those who have died. His resurrection assures believers that they too will share in the victory over death.
“Hail Thee, Festival Day” has been translated and adapted into English and continues to be used in Christian worship. Its joyful refrain celebrates the great acts of God in Christ and invites believers to join in praise for the victory, life, and hope that come through the risen Lord.
