Give Me this Mountain (I Want that Mountain)

By Bill Harvey

Lyrics

1. I saw the Giant of Prayerlessness upon the mountain high;
He laughed so hard at my unbended knee.
No longer in the Wilderness I’ll stay, and so I cry:
Give me this (I want that) mountain, it belongs to me!
Chorus:
Give me this (I want that) mountain! I want that mountain!
here the milk and honey flow, where the grapes of Eshcol grow,
I want that mountain! I want that mountain!
The mountain that my Lord has given me.
4. There was a Giant of Laziness who said I wouldn’t go
And witness for the One who set me free.
I’ll come from out the Wilderness, I’ll witness now I know;
Give me this (I want that) mountain, it belongs to me!
3. One faithless Giant upon the crest of Hebron’s lofty height
Has vowed that he’s the one to make me flee.
I’ll climb from out the Wilderness! and trust Jehovah’s might!
Give me this (I want that) mountain, it belongs to me!
4. Let ev’ry Giant of Distress and Unbelief and Sin
Get ready now to vacate, for you see:
I’ve come from out the Wilderness! I know I’m going to win!
Give me this (I want that) mountain, it belongs to me!

About This Hymn

“I Want That Mountain” is a spirited gospel chorus penned by Bill Harvey. Inspired by the biblical account of Caleb in Joshua 14:12, the song echoes a believer’s bold desire to claim God’s promises amidst spiritual giants. Through vivid imagery “Where the milk and honey flow, where the grapes of Eschol grow” it expresses a triumphant confidence in God’s provision and victory over obstacles.

Each verse names different spiritual giants prayerlessness, doubt, unbelief, sin that believers face in life. With each looming giant, the singer declares, “I want that mountain,” affirming that the mountain the Lord has given belongs to them. The chorus, repeated with rising conviction, serves as both a prayer and a declaration of faith, driving home the truth that Christ empowers us to overcome through His strength.

Though less well-known than many classic hymns, “I Want That Mountain” has found a place in revival circles, youth camps, and congregational singing, especially for its energizing message and simple, memorable structure. Its timeless call to spiritual boldness continues to encourage Christians to press forward, climb higher, and trust God for every promise He has set before them.
