Exult in the Savior's Birth

By Matt Boswell

Lyrics

Shepherds watched
their flocks at night,
attending lowly sheep;
Now within a cattle shed,
a much stranger watch they keep.
Today, a Savior has been born
and He is Christ, the Lord;
Placed within a humble trough,
this baby must be adored.
Pagan wise men from the East
seek out the infant King;
Trackless miles behind them lie
and now all their rev’rence bring.
They have come to worship Him
with spices and with gold;
Countless millions seek Him still,
who’s advent was long foretold.
3. For to us a child is born,
to us a Son is giv’n;
He shall reign in righteousness,
this Counselor King from heav’n.
The government will rest on Him,
He is the mighty God;
Prince of Peace, this gentle King
yet rules with a mighty rod.
4. Scriptures say that Mary’s boy
was born that he might die;
Angel voices burst in praise,
their harmony fills the sky.
Sing, “Glory in the highest heav’n!”
Sing, “Gracious peace on earth!”
Those on whom His favor rests,
exult in the Saviour’s birth.

Luke 2:8-14; Isaiah 9:6-7; Matthew 1:21-23; Galatians 4:4-5

About This Hymn

Exult in the Savior’s Birth is a Christ-centered Christmas hymn by Matt Boswell that calls the church to joyful, reverent praise for the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Rooted deeply in Scripture, the hymn proclaims the wonder of God taking on flesh, emphasizing both the humility of Christ’s coming and the glory of His redemptive purpose. Rather than focusing merely on sentiment or seasonal imagery, the hymn directs attention to the theological significance of the nativity as the decisive moment in God’s plan of salvation.

The text draws heavily from the angelic announcement in Luke 2, inviting believers to join heaven’s song of praise at the birth of the Savior. Christ is presented as the long-promised King of Isaiah 9, whose coming fulfills ancient prophecy and establishes an everlasting kingdom. The hymn celebrates the miracle that the eternal Son of God entered human history in weakness and humility, born not to be admired only, but to save His people from their sins.

A strong gospel clarity runs throughout the hymn. The incarnation is inseparably connected to the atonement, reminding worshipers that Jesus was born in order to die and rise again. Galatians 4 highlights this purpose, teaching that Christ came in the fullness of time to redeem those under the law. The hymn therefore moves beyond the manger to the cross and ultimately to the hope of redemption accomplished.

Musically and textually, the hymn is designed for congregational participation, encouraging unified praise that is both joyful and doctrinally rich. Its tone is celebratory but grounded, helping the church rejoice not merely in the event of Christ’s birth, but in its eternal saving significance.

Exult in the Savior’s Birth stands as a modern Christmas hymn that faithfully proclaims the heart of the gospel. It calls believers to marvel at the grace of God revealed in the incarnation and to respond with worship, gratitude, and confident hope in Christ, the promised Savior and reigning King.
