Eternal Light! Eternal Light!

By Thomas Binney

Lyrics

1. Eternal Light! Eternal Light!
How pure the soul must be,
when, placed within your searching sight,
it shrinks not, but with calm delight
can face such majesty.
2. The spirits that surround your throne
may bear the burning bliss;
but that is surely theirs alone,
since they have never, never known
a fallen world like this.
3. O how shall I, whose dwelling here
is dark, whose mind is dim,
before the face of God appear
and on my human spirit bear
the uncreated beam?
4. There is a way for man to rise
to that sublime abode:
an offering and a sacrifice,
a Holy Spirit’s energies,
an advocate with God.
5. Such grace prepares us for the sight
of holiness above:
those once in ignorance and night
can dwell in the eternal Light,
through the eternal Love.

John 1:4-9; John 8:12; Psalm 36:9; Revelation 21:23

About This Hymn

Eternal Light! Eternal Light! is a reverent and theologically rich hymn by Thomas Binney, a prominent English Congregational minister and hymn writer of the nineteenth century. The hymn reflects Binney’s deep concern for spiritual renewal and doctrinal clarity at a time when many churches were emphasizing both heartfelt devotion and thoughtful faith grounded in Scripture.

The central image of the hymn is light as a symbol of God’s presence, truth, and saving power. Drawing strongly from the Gospel of John, the hymn presents Christ as the true and everlasting Light, the One in whom life is found and by whom darkness is overcome. John declares that the light shines in darkness and that the darkness cannot extinguish it, and this truth forms the backbone of Binney’s text. The hymn does not treat light as a vague metaphor, but as a distinctly personal and redemptive reality revealed in Jesus Christ.

As the hymn unfolds, it moves from adoration to petition. The worshiper is not only praising the Eternal Light but also pleading for that light to shine within the heart. This inward focus reflects the biblical teaching that humanity’s deepest problem is spiritual blindness, not mere ignorance. The hymn therefore functions as a prayer for illumination, repentance, and renewal, aligning closely with Psalm 36, which proclaims that in God’s light we see light.

Binney’s language is solemn, earnest, and dignified, making the hymn especially suitable for reflective worship settings, communion services, or times of confession and prayer. It avoids emotional excess while still expressing profound dependence on divine grace. The light of Christ is shown to be both comforting and searching, exposing sin while guiding the believer into truth and holiness.

Eternal Light! Eternal Light! continues to serve the church as a reminder that genuine spiritual life flows from Christ alone. It calls believers to live not by human wisdom or fleeting brightness, but by the eternal, unchanging light of God that leads His people safely from this present age into the glory of His everlasting kingdom.
