Because He Lives
By Bill & Gloria Gaither
Lyrics
They called Him, Jesus;
He came to love,
Heal and forgive;
He lived and died
To buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there
To prove my Savior lives!
Because He lives,
I can face tomorrow!
Because He lives,
All fear is gone.
Because I know
He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!
A newborn baby,
And feel the pride
And joy he brings;
But greater still
The calm assurance:
This child can face
Uncertain days because He Lives!
I’ll cross the river,
I’ll fight life’s final
War with pain;
And then, as death
Gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory
And I’ll know He lives!

About This Hymn
“Because He Lives” is a cherished gospel hymn written by Bill and Gloria Gaither in 1971. It was first released by The Bill Gaither Trio on October 18, 1971, and published through their own company, Gaither Music, in Alexandria, Indiana.
The Gaithers composed this hymn during a time of personal and societal upheaval. Gloria was expecting their third child, and they were witnessing the turmoil of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including social unrest and distrust in institutions. Amid these challenges, they found hope in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which inspired the lyrics of “Because He Lives.”
The hymn's message of assurance and hope has resonated with countless individuals over the decades. Its refrain, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,” encapsulates the confidence and peace that faith in the living Christ provides. The song has been widely included in hymnals and continues to be a staple in Christian worship services.
