Angels We Have Heard on High
By James Chadwick (Translator) and
Lyrics
Sweetly singing o'er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavn'ly song?
Him whose birth the angels sing.
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Whom the choirs of angels praise.
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid
While our hearts in love we raise.

About This Hymn
"Angels We Have Heard on High" is an English translation of the traditional French carol "Les anges dans nos campagnes," which dates back to at least the 18th century and was likely sung in southern France. The original French carol celebrates the angelic announcement of Christ's birth as described in Luke 2:8–14, particularly the angels' proclamation:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:14, KJV)
The English version was translated in 1862 by Bishop James Chadwick (1813–1882), a Roman Catholic bishop in northeast England. While Chadwick's translation does not follow the French text word-for-word, it captures its joyful spirit and reverent tone. The refrain, "Gloria in excelsis Deo"—Latin for "Glory to God in the highest"—is retained directly from the Latin Vulgate Bible.
The tune commonly associated with the English carol is named "Gloria," a melody characterized by its soaring and jubilant refrain. The melody’s origin is somewhat uncertain, though it's often attributed to French folk traditions and has been harmonized in various hymnals over time.
The hymn is a vivid, worshipful depiction of the angelic announcement of Christ’s birth. It invites singers to imagine the shepherds' awe and to join in the heavenly chorus glorifying the newborn King. The final verse shifts the focus to adoration, inviting worshipers to come to Bethlehem in spirit and worship Christ with hearts of love.
