Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!

By W. Chatterton Dix

Lyrics

1. Alleluia! Sing to Jesus;
His the scepter, His the throne.
Alleluia! His the triumph,
His the victory alone.
Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion
thunder like a mighty flood:
"Jesus out of every nation
has redeemed us by His blood."
2. Alleluia! Not as orphans
are we left in sorrow now.
Alleluia! He is near us;
faith believes, nor questions how.
Tho' the cloud from sight received Him
when the forty days were o'er,
shall our hearts forget His promise,
"I am with you evermore"?
3. Alleluia! Bread of heaven,
here on earth our food, our stay.
Alleluia! Here the sinful
flee to You from day to day.
Intercessor, Friend of sinners,
earth's Redeemer, hear our plea
where the songs of all the sinless
sweep across the crystal sea.

About This Hymn

“Alleluia, Sing to Jesus” is one of the best known hymns written by William Chatterton Dix, an English hymn writer of the nineteenth century whose work continues to enrich Christian worship across many denominations. Dix wrote this hymn during a period marked by significant personal suffering. Yet, even while enduring illness and discouragement, he produced texts that revealed deep theological understanding and unwavering confidence in Christ. His hymn reflects a warm devotion to the Savior who reigns in heaven, cares for His people, and remains present with His church through His Spirit.

The hymn proclaims Christ as the King who sits upon the throne, receiving the praise of saints, angels, and all creation. It calls the worshiper to join in this heavenly song with heartfelt alleluias. The imagery is strongly influenced by the book of Revelation, where the Lamb is worshiped in glory. At the same time, Dix emphasizes the compassionate priesthood of Christ, a theme drawn from Hebrews. Though ascended, Christ is not distant. He intercedes for His people, strengthens them in temptation, and remains their unfailing friend.

One of the hymn’s most tender themes is the assurance that Christ is present with His church even though He is not physically seen. Dix reminds believers that they are not left as orphans. The Holy Spirit unites them to the risen Lord and brings comfort in every season. The hymn also celebrates the Communion table, describing it as a place where believers experience the nearness of Christ, remember His sacrifice, and look forward to His return.

The tune most often paired with this hymn, “Hyfrydol,” supports the text with a flowing and uplifting musical line that carries the congregation into joyful praise. Together, the text and melody create a hymn that unites heaven and earth in worship. It encourages believers to lift their hearts toward Christ, the exalted King who reigns with mercy and power, and who guides His people with faithful love until the day they see Him face to face.
