“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine”

The opening line sets the theme for the entire hymn. Assurance is not found in feelings, good works, or personal faithfulness, but in belonging to Jesus Christ.

This truth reflects Scripture clearly.

Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

The assurance spoken of here is not arrogance or presumption. It is the settled knowledge that salvation rests in Christ alone. The believer does not say, “I hope Jesus is mine,” but confidently declares, “Jesus is mine.” This is assurance based on God’s promise, not human effort.

“O what a foretaste of glory divine”

“Heir of salvation, purchase of God”

This line emphasizes ownership and inheritance. Salvation is not earned, but purchased.

“Watching and waiting, looking above”
