About Frederick B. Morley

Frederick B. Morley (1884–1969) was an American Methodist minister, hymn writer, and devotional poet whose work reflected a deep concern for Christian unity and practical church life. Though not as widely known as some hymn writers of his era, his contributions have endured, especially through one significant hymn that continues to be sung in many congregations.

Morley received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University and later earned his Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Boston University. His theological education prepared him for ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church, where he was ordained in 1915. He went on to serve several congregations in New Jersey and the greater New York metropolitan area. Among his pastoral appointments was the First Methodist Church in Oceanside, New York, where he ministered faithfully to his congregation.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Morley was a gifted writer. He authored a weekly newspaper column titled “Rhyme and Reason,” through which he shared poetic reflections, moral insights, and devotional thoughts. Many of his hymns and poems were originally written for use within his local church services. These writings were practical in tone, designed to edify believers and encourage thoughtful worship. Some of his works were later published, allowing them to reach a broader audience beyond his immediate congregation.

Morley is best remembered for his hymn “O Church of God, United,” a powerful expression of Christian unity centered on Christ. The hymn emphasizes the shared mission of the Church and calls believers to faithful service under one Lord. Its message aligns with the biblical teaching of unity in passages such as Ephesians 4:4-6, which declares, “There is one body, and one Spirit… One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” The hymn has been widely included in ecumenical hymnals and remains especially meaningful in contexts that highlight cooperation among different Christian traditions.

Frederick B. Morley’s legacy is one of quiet faithfulness. Through his ministry, writing, and hymnody, he contributed to the spiritual life of the Church by encouraging unity, devotion, and thoughtful reflection on the Christian calling.
