We Have Heard from That Bright, That Holy Land
By W. H. Hyde
Lyrics
We have heard, and our hearts are glad;
For we were a lonely pilgrim band,
And weary, and worn, and sad.
They tell us the saints have a dwelling there—
No longer are homeless ones;
And we know that the goodly land is fair,
Where life’s pure river runs.
That never a blight shall know;
And the deserts wild are blooming fair,
And the roses of Sharon grow.
There are lovely birds in the bowers green,
Their songs are blithe and sweet;
And their warblings, gushing ever new,
The angels’ harpings greet.
And the silvery band in white.
Of the city fair, with pearly gates,
All radiant with light.
We have heard of the angels there, and saints,
With their harps of gold, how they sing;
Of the mount with the fruitful tree of life,
Of the leaves that healing bring.
He’s the joy and light of the place;
In His beauty we shall behold Him there,
And bask in His smiling face.
We’ll be there, we’ll be there in a little while,
We’ll join the pure and the blest;
We’ll have the palm, the robe, the crown,
And forever be at rest.

About This Hymn
“We Have Heard from That Bright, That Holy Land” is a Christian hymn attributed to W. H. Hyde. The hymn reflects the Christian hope of heaven and the promise of eternal life with God. It belongs to a group of devotional hymns from the nineteenth century that focus on the believer’s anticipation of the heavenly home prepared by Christ.
The hymn draws on the promise given by Jesus in John 14:2–3, where He assures His followers that in His Father’s house are many dwelling places and that He goes to prepare a place for them. This assurance forms the foundation for the hymn’s theme of hope and longing for the heavenly homeland.
Another important idea in the hymn is the believer’s citizenship in heaven. Philippians 3:20 teaches that Christians belong to a heavenly kingdom and await the return of the Savior. The hymn reflects this perspective by portraying the Christian life as a journey toward the eternal home with God.
The imagery of the hymn also echoes the vision of the new heaven and new earth described in Revelation 21:1–4, where God promises to dwell with His people and remove sorrow, death, and suffering. This future hope encourages believers to remain faithful and joyful even in the midst of earthly trials.
The hymn further reflects Hebrews 11:16, which speaks of believers desiring a better country, a heavenly one, where God has prepared a city for them. Through its message, “We Have Heard from That Bright, That Holy Land” invites worshipers to reflect on the promise of eternal life and to look forward with hope to the day when they will dwell forever in the presence of God.
