Speak, O Lord

By Stuart Townend

Lyrics

1. Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
to receive the food of Your Holy Word.
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
that the light of Christ might be seen today
in our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us,
all Your purposes for Your glory.
2. Teach us, Lord, full obedience,
holy reverence, true humility.
Test our thoughts and our attitudes
in the radiance of Your purity.
Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see
Your majestic love and authority.
Words of pow'r that can never fail,
let their truth prevail over unbelief.
3. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us.
Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
that will echo down through eternity.
And by grace we'll stand on Your promises,
and by faith we'll walk as You walk with us.
Speak, O Lord, till Your Church is built
and the earth is filled with Your glory.

Psalm 119:105; Isaiah 55:10-11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12; James 1:21-25

About This Hymn

“Speak, O Lord” is a modern hymn-prayer that centers Christian worship on the authority, power, and transforming work of God’s Word. Written by Stuart Townend in collaboration with Keith Getty in 2005, the hymn has become widely used in churches that value Scripture-centered worship and thoughtful congregational singing. Rather than recounting a narrative, the text functions as a corporate petition, asking God to speak through His Word and to shape His people according to His truth.

The hymn opens by calling the congregation to attentive humility. God’s people ask for hearts that are ready to listen, teachable, and submissive to divine instruction. This echoes the biblical emphasis on receiving the Word with reverence and obedience, recognizing it as God’s chosen means for revealing His will and forming His people in righteousness.

A strong theological theme throughout the hymn is the active nature of Scripture. God’s Word is described as living, effective, and searching, able to expose sin, renew the mind, and produce spiritual fruit. This aligns closely with passages such as Hebrews 4:12 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which affirm Scripture as both authoritative and sufficient for faith and life.

The hymn also moves naturally from hearing to obedience. The prayer is not merely to understand God’s truth, but to live it out in love, holiness, and mission. The Word of God is presented as the foundation for perseverance, growth in Christlikeness, and faithful witness in the world.

Musically and textually, “Speak, O Lord” is well suited for use before or after the reading and preaching of Scripture. Its tone is reverent, earnest, and deeply pastoral. The hymn continues to serve the church by reminding believers that true worship listens to God, submits to His Word, and responds with lives shaped for His glory.
