Maker, in Whom We Live

By Charles Wesley

Lyrics

1. Father in whom we live,
in whom we are and move,
the glory, pow'r and praise receive
for Thy creating love.
Let all the angel throng
give thanks to God on high,
while earth repeats the joyful song,
and echoes to the sky.
2. Incarnate Deity,
let all the ransomed race
render in thanks their lives to Thee
for Thy redeeming grace.
The grace to sinners shown
ye heav'nly choirs proclaim,
and cry: "Salvation to our God,
salvation to the Lamb."
3. Spirit of holiness,
let all Thy saints adore
Thy sacred energy, and bless
Thy heart-renewing pow'r.
No angel tongues can tell
Thy love's ecstatic height,
the glorious joy unspeakable,
the beatific sight.
4. Eternal, Triune God,
let all the hosts above,
let all on earth below record
and dwell upon Thy love.
When heav'n and earth are fled
before Thy glorious face,
sing all the saints Thy love hath made
Thine everlasting praise.

About This Hymn

“Maker, in Whom We Live” is a hymn written by Charles Wesley, one of the most prolific hymn writers of the eighteenth century and a central figure in the Methodist revival. The hymn is a prayer of praise and gratitude that recognizes God as the Creator and Sustainer of life.

The opening idea of the hymn reflects Acts 17:28, where the apostle Paul declares that in God we live, move, and have our being. Wesley’s hymn acknowledges that human life depends entirely on God’s sustaining power and that every breath and moment comes from His gracious provision.

Another theme in the hymn is God’s continual care for creation. Psalm 104:27–30 describes how all living creatures depend on God for their food and life. Wesley echoes this biblical understanding by praising God as the one who gives and sustains life for all His creatures.

The hymn also reflects the teaching of Colossians 1:16–17, which explains that all things were created through Christ and that in Him all things hold together. This passage highlights Christ’s role not only in creation but also in sustaining the universe.

Additionally, Hebrews 1:3 teaches that Christ upholds all things by the word of His power. Wesley’s hymn celebrates this truth by recognizing God’s continuous involvement in the life of His people and the world.

Through its message of dependence on God and praise for His sustaining grace, “Maker, in Whom We Live” invites believers to respond with worship and gratitude. The hymn reminds worshipers that every aspect of life is a gift from God and that their proper response is to honor and praise the Creator who continually gives life and strength.
