Life Is Great! So Sing About It

By Brian A. Wren

Lyrics

1. Life is great! So sing about it,
As we can and as we should-
Shop and buses, towns and people,
Village, farmland, field and wood,
Life is great and life is given;
Life is lovely, free and good.
2. Life is great! What ever happens,
Snow or sunshine, joy or pain,
Hardship, grief or disillusion,
Suffering that I can’t explain
Life is great if someone loves me,
Holds my hand and calls my name.
3. Love is great! The love of lovers,
Whispered words and longing eyes;
Love that gazes at the cradle
Where a child of loving lies;
Love that lasts when youth has faded,
Bends with age, but never dies.
4. Love is giving and receiving
Boy and girl, or friend with friend;
Love is bearing and forgiving
All the hurts that hate can send;
Love’s the greatest way of living,
Hoping, trusting to the end.
5. God is great! in Christ He loved us,
As we should, but never can-
Love that suffered, hoped and trusted
When disciples turned and ran,
Love that broke through death forever.
Praise that loving, living Man!

Psalm 96:1-3; Psalm 150:1-6; Ecclesiastes 3:12-13; Philippians 4:4

About This Hymn

“Life Is Great! So Sing About It” is a joyful and celebratory hymn by Brian A. Wren that affirms life as a gracious gift from God and calls believers to respond with gratitude, praise, and song. Written in the late twentieth century, the hymn reflects Wren’s emphasis on accessible language and contemporary themes while remaining firmly grounded in biblical worship.

The hymn encourages worshipers to recognize the goodness of life in its everyday realities. Rather than limiting praise to extraordinary spiritual moments, it celebrates ordinary experiences such as work, rest, community, and joy. This approach reflects the biblical teaching that God is present in all aspects of life and that gratitude should shape the believer’s daily outlook. Singing becomes a natural response to recognizing God’s goodness woven through creation and human experience.

A strong theme in the hymn is the communal nature of praise. Life is not celebrated in isolation but together, as God’s people lift their voices in shared thanksgiving. The hymn invites all ages and backgrounds to participate, reinforcing the idea that worship is inclusive and life affirming. Praise is presented not as escape from the world but as engagement with it, acknowledging God’s presence within its challenges and blessings.

Theologically, the hymn connects joy with faithfulness. Rejoicing is not naïve optimism but a disciplined response rooted in trust in God. Even amid uncertainty or difficulty, believers are encouraged to sing as an act of hope and confidence in God’s sustaining grace. This aligns with Scripture’s repeated exhortation to rejoice in the Lord, not because circumstances are perfect, but because God is faithful.

“Life Is Great! So Sing About It” continues to resonate in worship settings that emphasize thanksgiving and celebration. Its upbeat tone and accessible message remind believers that praise is both a response to God’s gifts and a witness to the world, declaring that life, sustained and redeemed by God, is indeed worthy of joyful song.
