I Surrender All
By Judson W. Van DeVenter
Lyrics
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
I surrender all, I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel Thy Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

About This Hymn
"I Surrender All" is one of the most well-known and deeply moving hymns of total consecration in the Christian tradition. Written in 1896 by Judson W. Van DeVenter, with music composed by Winfield S. Weeden, the hymn reflects a personal testimony of surrendering one's entire life and will to Jesus Christ. It has since become a staple in revival meetings, altar calls, and personal moments of spiritual decision.
Judson W. Van DeVenter was born in Michigan in 1855 and showed great artistic talent from an early age. After graduating from college, he became a successful art teacher and was actively involved in church ministry, especially in music. For five years, Van DeVenter wrestled with the decision to pursue full-time ministry or to continue his promising career in art. The internal struggle was intense, and his heart was pulled in both directions. Eventually, the call to surrender completely to God's will became undeniable. One evening, kneeling in prayer, he gave his life fully to Christ’s service, forsaking his art career for evangelism. Out of that profound moment of surrender came the words to the hymn: “All to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I freely give…” It was a personal prayer turned into a universal song of commitment.
The music for the hymn was composed by Winfield S. Weeden, a fellow gospel musician and music teacher who worked with Van DeVenter during revival meetings. Weeden recognized the power of Van DeVenter’s text and composed a tune that would carry the weight and reverence of its message. He also published it in his hymnal Songs of Salvation, which helped introduce the hymn to a broader audience. Tragically, Weeden died just a few years later, but not before this hymn began touching lives around the world.
The hymn’s enduring popularity lies in its heartfelt message and biblical foundation. It echoes passages like Romans 12:1—“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice…”—and Luke 9:23, where Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves and take up their cross daily. Each verse of “I Surrender All” walks the worshipper through the journey of releasing worldly attachments and fully yielding to Christ’s lordship, culminating in the soul’s joy and peace found in that surrender. The simple yet profound refrain—“I surrender all, I surrender all, all to Thee my blessed Savior, I surrender all”—continues to resonate with believers who yearn to give Jesus every part of their life.
In the years since its writing, I Surrender All has been translated into many languages and sung in churches across denominations and continents. Whether sung in quiet personal devotion or in large gatherings, it continues to be a powerful reminder that true peace comes not from control, but from surrendering all to Jesus.
