Hold Fast Till I Come
By F. E. Belden
Lyrics
“Behold I come quickly, Mine own to receive;
Hold fast till I come; the danger is great;
Sleep not as do others; be watchful, and wait.”
“Hold fast till I come,” sweet promise of heaven–
“The kingdom restored, to you shall be given.”
“Come, enter My joy, sit down on the throne;
Bright crowns are in waiting; hold fast till I come.”
He comes to all others a “thief in the night.”
We know He is near, but know not the day–
As spring shows that summer is not far away.
The glorious appearing of Jesus, our Lord;
Of promises all, it stands as the sum:
“Behold I come quickly; hold fast till I come.”

About This Hymn
“Hold Fast Till I Come” is a solemn and exhortative hymn by F. E. Belden that reflects the strong biblical emphasis on perseverance and watchfulness in light of Christ’s promised return. Written at the turn of the twentieth century, the hymn became especially meaningful within Adventist and evangelical circles where the second coming of Christ is held as a central hope. The title itself is drawn directly from Christ’s own words to the churches in Revelation, giving the hymn an unmistakably scriptural foundation.
The hymn is shaped around Christ’s charge to His people to remain faithful amid trial, temptation, and delay. The repeated call to “hold fast” echoes the Lord’s instruction, “that which ye have already hold fast till I come” (Revelation 2:25, KJV), and again, “hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown” (Revelation 3:11, KJV). Belden presents the Christian life as a journey marked by endurance rather than ease, where faithfulness is proved over time, not merely declared in moments of enthusiasm.
A strong note of encouragement runs alongside the warning. The hymn does not portray perseverance as grim duty alone, but as hopeful endurance sustained by the certainty of Christ’s return. The believer is reminded that present trials are temporary and that the promise of Christ’s appearing gives strength to remain steadfast. This reflects the teaching of Hebrews that believers are not to cast away their confidence, for “he that shall come will come, and will not tarry” (Hebrews 10:35-37, KJV).
The hymn also carries a pastoral tone, addressing weary believers who may be tempted to loosen their grip on faith. It reassures them that endurance is not in vain, for “he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved” (Matthew 24:13, KJV). The waiting church is encouraged to cultivate patience, echoing the exhortation to be patient until the coming of the Lord, as the husbandman waits for the precious fruit of the earth (James 5:7-8, KJV).
“Hold Fast Till I Come” remains a powerful reminder that Christian hope is forward-looking and active. It calls the church to live faithfully in the present while fixing its eyes on the future, trusting that the Lord who commands endurance will soon return to reward those who have held fast to Him.
