Does Jesus Care?
By Frank E. Graeff
Lyrics
Too deeply for mirth or song;
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?
O yes, He cares- I know He cares!
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?
To resist some temptation strong;
When for my deep grief I find no relief,
Though my tears flow all the night long?
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks—
Is it aught to Him? does He see?

About This Hymn
"Does Jesus Care?" is a deeply moving hymn written by Frank E. Graeff in 1901, born out of personal hardship and emotional struggle. Graeff, often called the “sunshine minister” because of his normally cheerful personality, went through a season of intense trials, discouragement, and pain. In the midst of this, he wrestled with the question that many believers face in moments of suffering: Does the Lord truly care about my sorrow? He found his answer in the comfort of 1 Peter 5:7, which reassures that believers can cast every burden upon Christ because He genuinely cares. This passage brought him deep peace, and from that spiritual assurance the hymn was written.
The lyrics speak in a questioning tone at first, acknowledging real moments of human grief, loneliness, and the crushing weight of trials. Each verse asks if Jesus is concerned when our heart is pained, when our way is dark, when life seems burdensome. The powerful refrain answers with an emphatic and personal affirmation: “Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief.” This shift from doubt to confident faith mirrors the believer’s journey from despair to trust in the Savior’s compassion.
The hymn has remained a source of comfort to Christians worldwide, often sung at funerals, hospital visits, and prayer meetings. Its combination of honest emotion and scriptural truth bridges the gap between human weakness and divine love. The melody, composed by J. Lincoln Hall, enhances the tender and reflective nature of the words, making it easy for congregations to sing and meditate upon. Through “Does Jesus Care?”, Graeff’s testimony continues to encourage believers that the Good Shepherd is near in every valley, and that His care is not distant or theoretical, but personal and unchanging.
